Baby car seat guide

It has become a matter of course for adults to fasten their seat belts before starting the car. If babies or small children are to travel in the car, the principle of “safety first” also applies to the youngest passengers. But the restraint systems with which vehicles are equipped as standard are not suitable for children.

While children who can already sit are given a special child seat, the youngest are transported lying down in a so-called baby car seat.

These ‘restraint devices’, as they are referred to in the legal text, belong to the class “for infants” and are intended for babies and toddlers weighing less than 28lb. These car seats are designed to ride in your car in the rear-facing position only.

At the latest when the child’s head reaches the edge of the infant carrier, a “Toddlers and preschoolers” child seat must be purchased. Here you can find out which criteria are particularly important when selecting a baby seat in order to avoid making the wrong purchase.

Safety and comfort have top priority

When a baby is born, the new parents have to purchase many things. Nevertheless, the price should not be the first criterion that determines the purchase of a baby car seat. However, this does not have to mean that the most expensive model on offer is the best product. Much more important than the top fashionable design is whether the baby car seat offers your darling maximum safety and comfort.

Infant carriers equipped with a 5-point harness system are considered particularly safe. With this system, the lap belt ensures that the forces acting in the event of a collision are distributed evenly. In addition, this system reliably prevents the infant from slipping through. It is important that the belt is to be tightened at a central point. The buckle must function securely and should signal to the parents, if possible with a clicking sound, that everything fits perfectly. But the straps must not cut in any case. Furthermore, make sure that the baby car seat is equipped with good padding. Breathable cover fabrics are especially important in the summer months. So you can be sure that your little darling feels completely comfortable during the ride and can comfortably slumber towards the destination.

How to choose car seat for baby

Checklist for the child seat - a child seat must:

  • Avoid harmful substances.
  • Have a removable and washable cover for easy cleaning.

Properly securing a child seat in the car

Finally, in addition to a suitable child seat for the car, which has the right size and meets all standards, the attachment in the car also plays an important role in the safety of the child. Baby car seats can be placed both on the passenger seat and on the back seat. They must be attached against the direction of travel. If the baby car seat is placed on the passenger seat, then it is mandatory to turn off the airbag on the passenger side.In some vehicle types, vehicle owners cannot switch it off themselves but must visit a specialist workshop to do so. In the case of child seats of a different class, the front passenger seat must also be adjusted to the rearmost position and the back of the seat must be set upright.
