The better the indoor climate, the more comfortable and cozy your baby feels. The room climate is composed of room temperature, humidity, and room air.

The ideal temperature

Even if not all people have the same temperature sensation, a generally valid optimal room temperature can still be determined. This is 20°C in living rooms, between 16 and 18°C in bedrooms and 18-20°C in children’s rooms for playing.

When is the air too dry?

The question of the ideal room humidity arises mainly in winter and in strongly heated rooms. This is because a lot of moisture is removed from the rooms on cold days when ventilating, as warm air can absorb more moisture than cold air. For a healthy and comfortable indoor climate, the BAG recommends a room humidity of between 30 and 50 %.

The perception that the indoor air is too dry is a subjective feeling. Humans cannot reliably distinguish between 30, 40 or 50 % humidity. Often other reasons are responsible for this feeling, e.g. high exposure to dust and irritants. Also, too high room air temperature can lead to a feeling of dryness.

The humidity can be reliably controlled with a hygrometer. However, many commercial hygrometers indicate a relatively high humidity of 40-60% is optimal.

Room temperature during the day

During the day the room temperature should be around 20 degrees so that the child neither freezes nor sweats. Basically, children are on the move a lot, so they stay warm anyway. However, it should be noted that the floors of apartments are often colder because warm air rises to the top. If a small child plays a lot on the floor, it should be dressed a little warmer and, above all, wear warm slippers. The diaper pack keeps the abdomen of small children warm and protected from the cold.

It should be noted that cooler temperatures and temperature differences within the house train the child’s immune system. The organism has to adjust itself again and again, the defense system is addressed thereby. Basically the following temperatures are recommended inside the living rooms:

  • Living and dining room 20 degrees
  • Children’s room 20 to 21 degrees
  • Bathroom 24 degrees
  • Staircase and corridor 18 degrees
  • Bedrooms 16 to 18 degrees

In apartments with underfloor heating, care must be taken to ensure that the floor does not get too hot for the child. If the children play on the floor when the underfloor heating is on, they should be more lightly clothed.

Measures against too dry air

The BAG recommends humidifying the room only when the air humidity at 21°C falls below 30% for several days. Then room humidifiers can be of good use under certain circumstances. However, it is easier to do this with damp cloths or a bowl of water on the heater. Green plants also contribute to the air humidity. Make sure, however, that the leaves are not poisonous and that the plants do not smell too stimulating.

Too humid room air is unhealthy

Too dry” quickly becomes “too moist. The use of humidifiers quickly leads to over-humidification. If the room air is too humid, dust mites and molds feel too comfortable and multiply. Mites are harmless in themselves and do not transmit diseases. But they excrete allergens in their excrement, which can cause health problems such as respiratory diseases and allergies.

Also, not all humidifiers are unproblematic from a hygienic point of view. Not recommended are devices that function according to the atomizer principle. The humidifier water can quickly become contaminated and pollute the room air with bacteria and mold.

Ventilate – but correctly!

Fresh air is also part of a good indoor climate. Therefore, air the room several times a day with a draft – but only briefly and with doors and windows wide open (butt- or cross-ventilation, 2-3 times a day for about 10 minutes). This not only brings clean air into the apartment but also removes a lot of humidity in a short time, reduces mite and mold infestation and the energy loss is not so high.

It is not advisable to have constantly tilted windows in winter. The tilted position causes the outer walls to cool down, which can lead to mold growth. In addition, a lot of heating energy is lost. However, there is nothing wrong with continuous ventilation in summer.

Room climate in summer

If it gets very hot in the middle of summer, you can improve the indoor climate with a fan. But do not place the fan directly next to the baby bed. The best time to ventilate is at night when the air contains less dust and mites.

The optimal sleepwear

Babies often have a cool nose, cold hands, and feet. This says nothing about your body temperature because babies still have poor circulation in the first few months. It is best to check your body temperature between the shoulder blades. Here your baby should feel warm but not sweaty.

Most importantly, however, you should not dress your baby too warmly. Overheating is one of several risk factors for sudden infant death. A sleeping bag is usually sufficient, in tropical temperatures (e.g. during vacations) even just a diaper. Parents should always ask themselves what they would wear on their own body to feel comfortable but not to overheat.

What to pay attention to when buying a child room heater?

It is important to evaluate their heaters based on energy efficiency, functionality and safety parameters. You can use the following checklist.

Safety functions

This is the most important factor when choosing a heater for the children’s room. Certificates from popular testing laboratories such as ETL, UL, or CSA confirm that the heater meets safety standards.

  • Convection heating is the most common type for entire single rooms.
  • Radiant heaters are good for spot heating, while convection heaters take time to heat the space.
  • Ceramic heaters are also convection heaters.
  • Infrared heaters are also radiant heaters that use infrared quartz lamps as heating agents.
  • Thermal heaters are hybrid models that combine convection and radiant heating.

Heaters come in different styles, which differ in space-saving, easy installation, reducing noise, and achieving a certain goal. The floor heaters have a vertical compact design, are portable and compact. Personal heaters purposefully heat small rooms and are designed for specific needs. For the nursery, choose something that will not tip over.

Noise levels

Most fan heaters are noisier than those without fans. Micathermic air heaters are generally considered to be the quietest heaters among the various types.

When choosing between equal options, the price can be a decisive factor. Do not look only at the cost of buying a heater. You should take into account the services of the heater, the amount of fuel or electricity it can use as well as possible installation costs for some types. Here is an equation that will help to determine the daily operating costs:

Electricity costs are also daily running costs

Other features that require your attention are a thermostat, remote control, timer, power cord, automatic shutdown, handle and blades.

Types of heaters overnight

There are many types of heaters, but only a few of them meet the safety requirements and are convenient for children’s room. Let’s have a look at them.

Oil room heaters

Oil heaters are considered the best choice for children’s room. They are much safer than coils and electric fan heaters. This is because the surface of these heaters does not heat as much as others. This allows the child to touch them safely, without fear of burns. They can also be programmed to automatically shut down when they are unbalanced or tilted.

These heaters do not suck moisture out of the room. They also retain heat in the room for a longer period of time, even after they are turned off, making them more energy efficient. Many of them have smart thermostats that allow you to adjust the temperature according to your child’s needs.

Micathermic panel heaters

Micathermic panel heaters use 80% convection heat and 20% direct radiant heat. They are lightweight, some of them can be mounted on the wall. Those that stand on the floor are not recommended in rooms with children, because the surface is very hot.

Ceramic heaters with fan

Although it is another form of convection heater, the surface does not heat as much. This makes it a safe option for bedrooms with babies. It is a small portable device with a grating. When a child tries to stick his finger in it, they automatically shut down.

The disadvantage is that sometimes they can be noisy. So be careful with the model that you choose for your child’s bedroom. However, some quiet ceramic models with forced fan are a great option.
