Furniture for the baby room

The selection of baby and children’s furniture is large, so you can find the right furniture for every taste. However, it should always be considered that the furniture is not only beautiful but also functional. Many well-known manufacturers now offer so-called “furniture to grow with”, which is not only specially designed for infants. They can be adapted to the age of the child.

The most important pieces of furniture for the first furnishing are the baby bed, a changing table, and enough storage space for rompers, diapers, and other changing accessories for babies. A proper closet, small shelves for toys, and seating for the little ones are nice to look at but unimportant for the infant in the first months of life.

Changing table

Of central importance in the furniture for the baby room is the changing chest with the changing pad (flat, padded, washable). In any case, the combination of dresser and pad makes sense, because this way you will have everything in the baby room within reach: the changing accessories for babies on the dresser and all the equipment of baby clothes in the drawers. A separate closet in the baby room still has one or two years. The changing table itself should be 31,5 to 39,4″ wide and about 27,6″ deep. The height is usually 33,5″, so you do not have to bend down.
Useful for cooler days: a radiant heater in the baby’s room. Also, remember that your child becomes more mobile with each passing week. Therefore, it is also important to have side protection, either directly on the changing mat or on the changing unit. Practical additional elements are clothes hooks or a simple shelf on the wall above the dresser in the baby room. Then you do not have to rummage long for the current towel, bodysuit, and romper.

Armchair or rocking chair

For mothers who like to be really comfortable while breastfeeding or giving bottles, an armchair or rocking chair is recommended for the baby room. As a rule, mother and child have peace and quiet here, and often the baby then goes straight from the armchair to the adjacent bed. The baby bed is, of course, the focal point of the baby’s room. The crib replaces the cradle or bassinet after the first few months.

Baby crib

You furnish your baby’s room: the bed. The safety of your favorite is paramount. Therefore, a crib is a good choice. Because the bars prevent your little treasure from falling out of bed or climbing out. Ideally, invest in a model with removable and height-adjustable bars. This way you can enlarge the bed and later turn it into a crib in no time.

To prevent your offspring from hurting themselves, sturdy material is a must for the baby bed. It must not wobble and have no sharp corners and edges. In addition, the surfaces should be as smooth as possible. It is important that the bed is treated only with non-toxic paints and glazes, otherwise, you endanger the health of your baby.

The most important tips: A blanket can slip over the face! A sleeping bag is safer.

The baby mattress should be made of latex or foam and should not be too soft, the cover should be made of cotton and washable at 140 °F (60 °C) degrees, a “nest” as a round cushion should provide security, and the mattress, sheets, and sleeping bag should be tested for harmful substances.

For safety reasons, the following should be taken into account:

  • Secure sockets, cables, and the like well – at the latest from crawling age.
  • Screw furniture securely to the wall to prevent it from tipping over!
  • Absolutely every decorative item at baby’s reach height could end up in the mouth – that’s why natural, untreated, or saliva-resistant materials are particularly safe.

Paint for the nursery

To make the baby feel comfortable, the room also needs the right paint. The colors should not be too bright. Prefer to work with murals, which better appeal to the senses of the baby. The mobile is also very important.
Basic rules for colors in the baby room:

  • One or two contrasting colors on the wall with otherwise neutral white or light beige walls make the room shine.
  • Narrow small rooms benefit from lighter colors; large airy baby rooms can also tolerate considerably more darker colors.
  • Seek out Blue Angel and other environmental seals for colors that are as free of pollutants as possible.
  • Natural furniture gives the room a natural coziness, especially light wood types are popular.

Colorful splashes of color in the form of rugs, floor pillows or flowing curtains are, of course, always good in the baby room.

Baby room: wall color and ceiling

Many options are available in the choice of wall color for the baby room. Large pictures with bright, fresh tones have an equally stimulating effect on the little ones. The baby room ceiling can also be eye-catching: a beautiful mobile with its colors and movements attracts the baby’s attention to its surroundings.
Placed in the baby room above the changing unit or the baby bed, the mobile becomes a “silent dialogue partner” for your child. It is fascinating to see how babies follow a mobile sometimes wondering, sometimes smiling and train their facial expressions.
Fluorescent moons and stars on the ceiling are also pretty. Tip: Your child will love a self-painted night sky above his sleeping corner in the baby room! For the night, night lights or dimmers are generally recommended to avoid full light during nighttime breastfeeding and diapering. During the day, curtains or blinds ensure undisturbed sleep.
A baby monitor in the baby’s room is also advisable so that parents know everything is okay. Speaking of safety, all furniture must be free of sharp corners and edges, all paints non-toxic. What else you should consider is in our checklist for safety in the baby room.

Baby room: the flooring

There are several options for the flooring in the baby room: Carpeting comes into question because it absorbs noise and dust. Of course, you have to vacuum it regularly, but not while the baby is in the baby room – and air it well afterwards!
An alternative for the flooring in the baby room is cork parquet, which creates probably the most pleasant room atmosphere.

FAQ - Baby Room

❓ When should you start organizing your baby's room?

Start organizing your nursery while you’re in your second trimester. Hopefully, by that time, you’re past the morning sickness and fatigue, but don’t feel too uncomfortable to move around and decorate. The closer you get to your due date, the harder it will be to get things done!

There may be items that you’re planning to register for and might not receive until later. If that’s the case, organize as much of the nursery as you can and fill in additional items after your baby shower. Try to set up the big pieces of furniture while you’re still (somewhat) comfortable.

❓ What is the best way to organize baby clothes?

Life as a new mom is stressful enough. Here’s how to organize baby clothes to avoid frantic searches for supplies later on. 5 Tips on how to organize baby clothes:
1. Keep daily used items close to the changing table.
2. Use size organizers in the closet.
3. Drawer dividers can have multiple purposes.
4. Organize by item type.
5. Keep a hamper close by your changing table.

❓ How should I organize my baby's room?

It is to establish functional areas. Make sure you have what you need within arm’s reach of those areas.
A few examples of functional areas in a nursery are:
Reading and rocking – Keep books and maybe even a lamp near the rocking chair.
Changing area – Store diapers, wipes, the pail, and a few changes of clothes all near the changing table.
Clothes and laundry – Organize the closet and keep the laundry basket near both the changing table and the closet.
Sleeping – Keep blankets, sheets, and baby monitors all near the bed.
Think about how you will use the baby’s room and make the organization system intuitive.

Don’t pack the baby room so full that you don’t have room for the baby to grow. As the baby grows, you are going to be changing the nursery with it.
If you use baskets and tubs, they can easily be transitioned to holding larger clothes and toys.
